2L Jessica N. Ocampo is spending her summer working for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
After applying to the Hispanic Lawyers Scholarship Fund (HLSF), Ocampo was selected to interview before a panel of HLSF trustees based on her academic performance, law school leadership and engagement, and commitment to the Latino and legal communities. Four months later, she got the call every applicant hopes for—the fellowship was hers, if she was still interested. And it didn’t take Ocampo, who intends to pursue employment and labor law after graduation, long to accept.
Now she’ll spend the next three months at the NLRB assisting Deputy Regional Attorneys with their investigations, facilitating intake interviews in English and Spanish, and conducting legal research, among other duties.
“I will pretty much learn how to handle a case from start to finish, and I’m very excited about that,” said Ocampo.

Students interested in similar fellowships might be surprised how many opportunities are only a Google search away. In Ms. Ocampo’s own words: “You have no idea how many opportunities I found with just a simple search and sending an email to the person I thought would be in charge. It shows that you have the initiative, desire, and drive to go after what you want, and employers like to see that.”
