When The John Marshall Law School added a new entrance at State Street, four security specialists were added to the staff. Dan Garcia, Errol “Earl” Hibbett, Ali Haleem and Dan Flemming are manning the security desk and performing building patrols, under the direction of Dave Martino, director of Campus Security and Safety.
“We are getting more foot traffic at the State Street entrance, and these four outstanding people are working to keep our building secure and our students, faculty, staff and visitors safe,” he said. “They are a great complement to the security officers who work at the Plymouth Court entrance. “
Martino also has assigned specific responsibilities to the new staff members. Flemming will be coordinating investigations of reported security incidents. Garcia will be handling building life safety issues. Hibbett will be coordinating protection assignments, and Haleem will be working on security systems projects.
Jason Dalmer was promoted to first shift security supervisor, and Ernie Spiotto has stepped up to the role of second shift supervisor. Both will be manning the office off the Sargis Miner Lounge on the second floor. In addition to their supervisory duties, they will be preparing ID cards and administering the CTA U-pass program.
Flemming left the banking industry to start a new career in security. Before coming to John Marshall, he worked at two companies handling investigations, performing criminal background checks and various administrative work. His efforts helped the security staff implement new procedures and establish new directives.
Garcia has spent 10 years in the security industry working for various security companies and organizations. He found personal protection/bodyguard work to be his favorite part of the job, “mainly because of all the interesting people / celebrities I have met, hearing their stories and seeing what kind of people they really are behind the scenes when there are no cameras on them.” Ultimately, Garcia hopes to become a police officer.
Hibbett did security work with the United States Marine Corps. His assignments took him overseas to countries that were “unfamiliar and sometimes dangerous. I fell in love, so-to–speak, with this kind of occupation because of the teamwork, camaraderie, and the idea of caring for another’s well-being.” Today he is using techniques for personal and property security learned in the military when he works as a protection specialist at John Marshall.
Haleem received a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University in sociology and law enforcement and justice administration with special emphasis on criminal law, investigations and victimization. The past 12 years, he has worked at two major shopping malls earning employee appreciation and distinguished service awards.
Haleem also was an investigations specialist for Target Corp. working with a joint task force with local police agencies. In April 2009, he was recognized for handling the most arrests and the largest dollar amount recovery for Target. Before coming to John Marshall, he was a state employee working at the DuPage County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office.
