He contributed an entry on the Society of Law Teachers blog. His piece, “Illinois Dept. of Revenue Proves Civil Unions are Not Equal” was an analysis of a new Illinois Department of Revenue policy banning couples in civil unions from filing joint state taxes.  It can be found at

Niedwiecki presented at the annual Institute of Law Teaching Conference the weekend of June 3-5 at New York Law School, on “Teaching for Lifelong Learning: Self-Assessments, Portfolios, and Feedback Sessions.” He discussed ways to improve the metacognitive abilities of students through effective formative assessment techniques, self-assessment assignments, and assessment portfolios.

They co-authored the introduction to the 2010 International Law Year in Review, published by the American Bar Association Section of International Law in its scholarly journal, The International Lawyer.  They served as co-editors of the international law update, which spans 595 pages.  The journal is published in cooperation with the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in Dallas, Texas.

Professor Mark E. Wojcik

Activities

In May 2011, he presented the first part of a seminar for Egyptian law professors at a weeklong seminar in Cairo, Egypt, focusing on how to incorporate interactive teaching techniques for legal education in Egypt, where classrooms traditionally can have 1,000 students or more in a single lecture hall.

In June 2011, Wojcik made two presentations at the 21st Century Legal Skills Conference held at Bahecesir University Faculty of Law in Istanbul, Turkey.  The conference was co-sponsored by the Legal Writing Institute, of which he is a board member.  Wojcik’s first presentation focused on issues relating to Libel Tourism and recent developments in the United States and the United Kingdom on international litigation matters relating to defamation law.  His second presentation was on international commercial law, including the new Turkish accession to the United Nations Convention on the International Sale of Goods and consideration of a new treaty on the use of electronic communications in forming international contracts.

Wojcik was named to a one-year term as a commissioner on the American Bar Association Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.

Wojcik, secretary of the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA), represented ISBA at the May 5, 2011, Supreme Court Admission Ceremony for new attorneys in the First District.  Illinois Supreme Court Justices Anne M. Burke and Mary Jane Theis officiated during the ceremony.

Wojcik was named chair of the International Committee of the American Bar Association Tort, Trial, and Insurance Practice Section.
