Veterans Legal Clinic Teams Up with UIC’s CUPPA to Better Serve Those Who’ve Served

In 2006, three Law School degree candidates recognized that veterans were having trouble navigating the Veterans Benefits Administration claims process. In an effort to provide legal assistance to such veterans, they created the Veterans Legal Clinic. Thirteen years later, Assistant Professor of Law and Director of UIC Law’s Veterans Legal Clinic, Yelena Duterte, started thinking more about who the Clinic should be serving that they weren’t. In an interview with UIC’s Office of Advancement, Duterte shares how Dan Alberti (MPA ‘21), a student in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA), helped the Clinic solve that problem by assisting with research and interviewing stakeholders to inform a data strategy.
