John Marshall Law School Professor Daryl Lim, Director of the Center for Intellectual Property, Information & Privacy Law, spent late February exploring partnerships with international IP, competition, information and privacy stakeholders in France, Germany and Switzerland. Strategic relationships with European law firms and academic institutions would offer Chicago attorneys and IP students a competitive advantage in key areas, including data protection and European patent and trademark practice.

In Strasbourg, France, Director Lim met with University of Strasbourg Interim President Michel Deneken and Professor Christophe Geiger, Director General of the Center for International IP Studies (CEIPI), as well as law and economics faculty members and students. CEIPI, which trains more than 2,500 IP professionals a year, provides IP consultancy services to organizations, including the European Commission and the World Trade Organization, and provides IP training to officials from developing countries.

In Zurich, Switzerland, Professor Lim met with faculty and students at the University of Zurich and at ETH Zurich, a STEM university. At the University of Zurich, Lim delivered keynote remarks on the intersection of algorithms and competition law at a closed-door roundtable and public remarks as a panelist on the same topic. Other speakers included President Andreas Heinemann, Swiss Competition Commission; Antonio Capobianco, OECD; Cyril Ritter, European Commission; and Hubert Gilliéron, Baker & McKenzie (Paris). At ETH Zurich, he lectured on the application of behavioral economics at the intersection of IP and antitrust. ETH Zurich, a hub for interdisciplinary IP research, has consistently been ranked among the top universities in the world.

In Karlsruhe, Germany, Lim met with Hon. Klaus Grabinski of the German Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof), which has jurisdiction over all patent infringement appeals in Germany. Judge Grabinski is Europe’s leading patent jurist and one of the architects of the new Unified Patent System. While in Germany, Professor Lim also met with law firm partners in Düsseldorf.

John Marshall’s Intellectual Property program was ranked #19 in the nation, and #1 in the Midwest, by U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 Best Graduate Schools. The IP program has been continuously ranked since IP rankings began in 2000. The Center for Intellectual Property, Information & Privacy Law offers an LLM in Intellectual Property Law, for practicing attorneys, and an MJ in Intellectual Property Law, for non-attorneys, both of which can be earned entirely online.
