Claireen Herting
Vice President of The John Marshall Law School Board of Trustees and Tax Law Advisory Board Member
Claireen Herting is the vice president of The John Marshall Law School Board of Trustees and a member of the Center for Tax Law and Employee Benefits’ Tax Law Advisory Board. In 1983, she was the recipient of John Marshall’s Distinguished Service Award. She has also taught Personal Financial Planning as part of the Center’s LLM in Tax Law program.
A proud John Marshall alumna, Herting earned her BS from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and her MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business before passing her CPA examination. While working full-time as an auditor in public accounting, she graduated top of her class from John Marshall’s evening program, and notes that her legal experiences at John Marshall were instrumental in her professional success. Herting is currently a manager in the personal finance services group at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Herting joined The John Marshall Law School Board of Trustees in 1984. She served the board as secretary from 1999–2000 and then as treasurer from 2001–2004, before being appointed vice president in 2004. Throughout her service, Herting has contributed greatly to the evolution of The John Marshall Law School.
In addition to her service at The John Marshall Law School, Herting serves on the Chicago Bar Association Board of Managers, as well as on its Federal Tax Committee, Finance Committee, and on its Estate and Gift Tax Committee, of which she is the former chair. She also serves on the Chicago Bar Foundation Board. Additionally, Herting serves on and is the former chair of the Illinois Board of Examiners for CPAs and serves as the Great Lakes regional director of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. Herting also dedicates her time to numerous philanthropic endeavors, including service as the vice president of Easter Seals and treasurer of Free Arts of Illinois, and as a member of the Museum of Science and Industry’s Gift Planning Advisory Committee.
Herting’s previous involvements include service on the boards of the Illinois CPA Society, including a term as treasurer; the Illinois CPA Endowment Board; the Chicago Estate Planning Council, where she served as president, chaired numerous committees, and received the Austin Fleming Distinguished Service Award; and on the Art Institute of Chicago’s Gift Planning Advisory Committee.
Over the past 25 years, Herting is most proud of John Marshall’s improved physical capabilities and the growth and development of advanced academic programs, including the tax law concentration area. Additionally, Herting takes great pride in the school’s commitment to pro bono services though the Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic, Fair Housing Legal Clinic, and the VITA program. She looks forward to continuing to serve the community of The John Marshall Law School by working to improve the school’s infrastructure, helping to grow its academic programs, and continuing its mission of access and opportunity.
