It was an “on court” salute to the Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic on Nov. 11 when Jerry Siegel (second from left), president of Midway Moving & Storage, an official sponsor of the Chicago Bulls, welcomed (from left) Associate Dean Anthony Niedwiecki; Ashley Sloan (JD ’13), who serves with the U.S. Marine Corps; Thomas White, Jr., director of the Clinic, and a retired U.S. Army JAG officer; and Akeela White (JD ’08), who served in the U.S. Army.
On Nov. 11, the United States honored its men and women who have sacrificed in service for its freedom. This Veterans Day, the Chicago Bulls will salute those heroes, as well as the students and staff at The John Marshall Law School who serve them.
At its Veterans Day game, the Bulls recognized John Marshall’s Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic (VLSC). Located in the Windy City, it is the nation’s largest free law school legal clinic that provides legal assistance to veterans navigating the VA benefit system.
“Our veterans have fought hard for our freedom. Our students, staff and attorneys fight hard to honor those heroes, and we are proud to be acknowledged for their work,” John Marshall Dean John E. Corkery said.
Jerry Siegel, president of Midway Movers, an official sponsor of the Chicago Bulls, commended the law school as well as three veterans: Thomas White, clinical director of the VLSC, and John Marshall graduates Ashley Sloan and Akeela White.
“The work John Marshall does on behalf of veterans is invaluable,” Siegel said. “Midway is proud and delighted to celebrate them, and all of our nation’s men and women who serve. Midway looks forward to continuing its efforts to support John Marshall and the wonderful work it does on behalf of the veterans who have served our nation. “
John Marshall students at the VLSC work under the supervision of practicing attorneys and professors assisting veterans in resolving benefits claims and other legal problems. Among the first clinic of its kind, the VLSC began taking clients in 2007 and works with a network of more than 350 volunteer attorneys. It serves as the model that has inspired the creation of veterans legal clinics at law schools around the country.
