The John Marshall Law School Alumni Association’s annual Freedom Award and Distinguished Service Awards Luncheon on May 10, 2013, will honor outstanding citizens who have either dedicated their careers to military service or are working to improve the lives of veterans.
Urban Miyares, a blinded Vietnam War veteran, will receive the Freedom Award in recognition of his military service and his efforts on behalf of veterans for more than 40 years. Miyares is a nationally recognized motivational speaker and entrepreneur serving as president of the Disabled Businesspersons Association, a volunteer-driven charity he founded in 1985.
Miyares will be joined at the noon program at the Standard Club, 320 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago, by Distinguished Service Awards alumni recipients:
- Col. Eugene Baime, United States Army, staff director for the Office of Military Commissions Trial Judiciary;
- Brian Clauss, director of The John Marshall Law School Veterans Legal Support Center since 2007;
- Frank Del Barto of Masuda, Funai, Eifert & Mitchell who has argued pro bono on behalf of veterans who are appealing their disability compensation claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs;
- Donald T. Rubin, the managing member of Rubin & Norris, LLC., who organized the not-for-profit Operation Welcome Homes in 2005 to give returning veterans who were stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan the opportunity to take a vacation through the generosity of others;
- Judge Alexander White of the Circuit Court of Cook County who served in the United States Marine Corps and Reserve for more than 30 years as a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps.
“Just as the law school is making great strides to support our veterans through the work of the Veterans Legal Support Center and Clinic, we decided we would give our recognition to those who serve or have served, or who are giving of themselves to assist veterans,” said Program Chairperson Judge Regina Scannicchio of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
Proceeds from the luncheon benefit the Alumni Association Scholarship. Tickets are $95. Details are at www.events.jmls.edu.
