UIC Law student Erica Fatima is the 2021 recipient of the Midway Moving & Storage Scholarship, which recognizes and provides financial assistance to promising students serving in the Law School’s Fair Housing Legal Clinic.
Ms. Fatima earned national recognition for her success in mock trial competitions and was a 2020 Fellow for the Diverse Attorney Pipeline Program. She currently serves as a research assistant for Professor Hugh Mundy under the Law School’s inaugural Antiracism and Social Justice Fund. Fatima and Mundy, along with student Mohena Kaur, are working to expose systemic racism embedded in the Federal Rules of Evidence. Fatima’s opinion article, “Again with conviction: Focusing justice reform on evidence rules,” co-authored with Mundy, which proposes changes to the various Illinois evidence rules, was published last month in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.
The Midway Moving & Storage Scholarship is sponsored by President and CEO Jerry Siegel and Ashley Rafael (’92), the company’s General Counsel. To qualify for the scholarship, UIC Law students must be enrolled or serving in the Fair Housing Legal Clinic and reside, or have resided, in Chicago Housing Authority (Section 8) housing.
